Making your own smoothies is a great way to boost your daily nutrition and help you lose or maintain your current weight. Initially you should keep your smoothies simple, by adding basic ingredients. These could include greens, berries, fruit and milk. After a while however, you may want to blend-in extra ingredients to vary the texture and flavour of your smoothies. Instead of adding artificial powders, include these 5 simple ingredients to make your smoothies a lot more flavourful.

Seeds – Seeds like Chia, Flax and Hemp Seeds are packed with omega fatty acids, protein and fibre. They will also improve the texture of your smoothie, by increasing its thickness and adding crunch.

Nuts – Nuts such as Cashews, Almonds and Macadamias can increase the healthy fats, fibre and protein content of your smoothies. Remember to soak them the night before, so that they are soft and easily blendable.

Nut butters – Butters such as Almond, Cashew, Peanut, Sunflower Seed Butter and Tahini are great additions to thicken any smoothie.

Blue-green super foods – These include Chlorella and Spirulina, which are plant based minerals that are packed with vitamins, antioxidants and protein. You will be able to find these at your local health food store.

Protein – Adding protein to your smoothies, will help you stay fuller for longer. Raw eggs are a good addition to a smoothie, but can be an acquired taste. For those who prefer plant based sources of protein, choose from beans, tofu and legumes.
