Minerals are nature’s way of strengthening teeth and reducing the risk of cavities. Most people will lose minerals in their teeth as they age. However, this can be exuberated by consuming an unhealthy diet that is high in sugar and acid. Sugars and acids have been known to increase the levels of bacteria in the mouth which increases plaque and tartar resulting in cavities and gum disease. It is however possible to replenish these minerals with lifestyle changes, which can increase the remineralization process.

Here are some simple tips that can help remineralization.

Brush your teeth – Cavities are caused by too much bacteria in the mouth. To reduce bacteria levels, brush your teeth at least twice daily using a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste.

Cut out sugar – Sugar causes acid which increases bacteria levels and breaks down tooth enamel. People who eat sugar frequently are at a higher risk of cavities and gum disease.

Chew sugarless gum – Sugarless gum can cause remineralization by improving saliva production. Sugar-free gum removes sugar, plaque, and carbs from teeth while increasing saliva production.

Consume fruit juices in moderation – Concentrated fruit juices are high in sugar and acid which causes enamel damage and cavities. As a replacement, consider eating a variety of fruits in moderation.

Include calcium and vitamins – Calcium and vitamin D are key to maintaining strong teeth and bones. Include low-calorie, calcium-rich foods like plain milk and cheeses into your daily diet. As for vitamin D, consider getting some sun exposure when the weather permits, and in the winter months add a vitamin D supplement to maintain vitamin D levels.
