E-cigarettes have been considered to be an alternative method to cigarettes. However, it has been revealed, thanks to a study by scientists from the University of Greece, that they cause damage to the lungs.
At the European Respiratory Society’s Annual Congress, Professor Christina Gratziou and her team explained their findings, in saying, “We found an immediate rise in airway resistance in our group of participants, which suggests e-cigarettes can cause immediate harm after smoking the device. More research is needed to understand whether this harm also has lasting effects in the long-term. “The ERS recommends following effective smoking cessation treatment guidelines based on clinical evidence which do not advocate the use of such products.”
Their study, which conducted experiments on 32 volunteers, 24 of whom were regular smokers while the rest were lifetime non-smokers, asked the participants to use an electronic cigarette for ten minutes by inhaling the vapor into their lungs. Some of the volunteers had asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) while others had completely healthy lungs.
With airway resistance being one of the signs of lung damage among others, a spirometry test was conducted, and what was found was that there was an immediate (and substantial) increase in airway resistance for both regular smokers and lifetime non-smokers. However, the volunteers with COPD or asthma registered no significant increase.
