The misunderstood dairy product; Butter

greatdrugspharmacy july 2016Butter was linked with heart disease and death. However, a paper published in the journal PLOS ONE, suggested that butter is more a neural product than one that is good or bad for your health.

The co-author of the paper, Laura Pimpin, who is a data analyst for the UK health Forum of London said “We know from recent studies that the effects of dairy fats on health are not as negative as saturated fat from other sources, so we were expecting butter to have a limited risk in causing disease,”

The researchers looked at data from 9 other studies on butter consumption and its health risks. These studies included 636,151 participants, which was combined into a large meta-analysis.

The data showed that one tablespoon of butter was associated with 1% higher risk of death and 4% lower risk of type 2 diabetes. Pimpin said “We were slightly surprised by the diabetes result: Butter intake appeared to have a very moderate protective effect. However, it is important to remember that this is based on very few studies, so it may not be a reliable result, and it shows that more studies are needed on the topic.”

She went on to say “People should think of the strength of all of these relationships as small, either increasing or decreasing butter intake does not appear to have a major relationship with health, Other food choices are more important.”
