Obesity caused by a gene known as the KSR2, new treatments for obesity and type 2 diabetes is possible

Researchers at the University of Cambridge consider a genetic mutation, called KSR2, to be the reason why some people a lot but don’t gain weight while others struggle with the same.

In revealing their findings on the subject of obesity, researchers concluded, “This variation between people is largely influenced by genetic factors. The discovery of a new obesity gene, KSR2, demonstrates that genes can contribute to obesity by reducing metabolic rate – how well the body burns calories.”

Until recently, it has been established, with tests conducted on mice, that this gene KSR2 is integral to regulation metabolism and energy balance. However, it was not until this study that researchers found that it was no different for humans as well.

In order to reach this conclusion, researchers analyzes genetic sequences of 2101 children who were diagnosed with childhood obesity and compared the results with those who were considered to have a healthy, normal weight.

The results indicated that children with a KSR2 gene mutation showed severe insulin resistance, lower metabolic rate and heart rate as well as an increase in appetite as opposed to those with a normal version of gene.

One of the researchers goes on to say that even though diet and physical activity might be the reason why obesity occurs, some people tend to gain more weight than others.

With this finding, new treatment options can be found for obesity and type 2 diabetes which is possible if the protein within the KSR2 gene can be regulated.

Another study published in Medical News Today stated that women who gain excess weight during pregnancy can have obese children.
