5 common causes of hair loss in teenage girls

43

Hair loss in teenagers is common and can often cause emotional trauma at a critical time in their lives. Here are some common causes for hair loss in teenage girls.

  1. Hormones – Hormones will fluctuate a teenage girl’s emotions, eating habits, energy levels, and hair growth. Hair loss is attached to changes in the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which shrinks hair follicles, which causes hair to fall out.
  2. Medication – Some medicines that affect a teenager’s hormones can cause hair loss. Therefore, hair loss can particularly affect teenage girls who take birth control pills to relieve other symptoms like acne.
  3. Poor nutrition – Poor nutrition can cause hair loss due to deficiencies in important vitamins and nutrients. Since hair growth is not a life sustaining function, most often the body will use most of its nutrients to enrich more vital functions that sustain life.
  4. Over-Styling – Teenagers who are keen to keep moving with current trends, may use curling or straightening irons, products, and hair color that damage and weaken the scalp and hair.

Deeper medical condition – Hair loss can be a symptom due to a scalp infection, overactive or underactive thyroid, a skin disorder or diabetes that is not regulated. Therefore, if you suspect that your teenager has a medical condition that needs treatment, it is best to speak to a qualified medical practitioner.Save
