What do to if your toenail falls off?

At least once in your life, you will experience a toenail falling off due to the trauma of wearing ill-fitting shoes, walking in heels, or while training for a full or half marathon. Toenails get damaged because the shoe and the nail rub against each other causing the nail to move from the skin. Here are some tips to handle this commom problem.

If your nail comes off in a bloody mess – Start off by applying pressure on the area until the bleeding subsides. Follow through with an antibiotic ointment and a band-aid. Keep reapplying the ointment and changing the band-aid until the opening has closed.

The nail is all the way off – If there is little trauma, the nail may just fall off without any bleeding. Place a band-aid on the skin to prevent infection and keep your feet clean until the area is healed.

If the nail’s not all of the way off – Avoid pulling the nail out as this will cause a lot of pain and additional trauma. Look at trimming the loose nail and shorten the nail to avoid snagging. It is best to be patient and let the new nail grow on its A new nail will take about six to nine months to grow fully, but you will see a new nail emerging in about six weeks.

When to see a doc – If you experience swelling or drainage issues, it is best to visit a doctor immediately.
